Powering Up!

Once the installation was complete it was time to power it up. I turned the car on, only to find that there was no bass. I opened up the hatch and realized that I had forgotten to connect the power cable. (???) I went to attach it, but lost my balance while crouching in the back of the wagon and shorted the power cable to the amplifier casing. At this precise moment, I learned three things:

1. Always disconnect the battery or remove the amplifier fuse when working on your system.
2. Do not take short cuts. Short cuts lead to mistakes.
3. No matter what anyone says, always use a fuse wherever there is power.

The first drive

After hooking everything back up, (and replacing the blown fuse) it was time to go for a ride. With such a crappy enclosure I wasn't expecting much, but now that it was in a station wagon instead of a trunk, it was much, much louder. Even still, I knew it had more potential so the following day I was back to the place I had gotten the bulk Monster Cable and the same guy cut me another deal on an open-box Q-Logic enclosure.

New enclosure

This is the same sub in a new box. Not only does it look a hundred times better, but it sounds a hundred times better too! That white crap around the edges of the sub is leftover caulk.

Right now it just slides around in the back, but I'm eventually going to secure it somehow, either with rubber feet to grip the rubber mat or with some kind of restraint.

One of the nice things about locating the amp on the seatback is that it is easy to gain access to the controls. All I have to do is pull the seatback latch...

...and flip the seatback forward!
