The Fresh Air Intake Project:
I needed a way to DUCT.....FRESH/COOL air to the Intake Filter...in the back of the engine bay, it normally would be heat soaked & suck in only heated air from around the motor etc this is BAD........ I thought I could do better...!
I noticed a "box" for the over sized S&B filter is possible by relocating the battery to the trunk, using the battery space like an air box...only i needed to shield it from radiant heat & also feed fresh air to it some how...many things were considered... vents, Hood scoops, Fender Vents? Custom Hood..?
I actually cut a big ass hood vent into a CF hood right over the filter that i only use for the race track...i saw a 10 degree reduction in intake temps there! so i decided to look under the plastic cowl piece at the base of the windshield & the firewall to see what was possible.......
here is what i finally did....
..Before...note the small 2.5 inch grey section of firewall right over/behind the Filter...
..After....considered slots, a big rectangular hole, or a pattern of holes in an array... i decided to keep it simple...
I almost cut slots into the panel above the holes...but the cowl sits on top of that & i would have had to cut slots in that also & that would have allowed rain to shoot right in at speed...not cool...so i decided it best to draw air from the vented cowl section at the center of the base of the windshield..
Most car designs have a high pressure zone at the base of the windshield when at speed...I used the OEM cowl venting that takes advantage of this pressure to feed cool fresh air thru the channel in front of the windshield into my "AIR BOX" for my custom filter (8.5x6)it flows DIRECTLY onto my Filter thru the holes i cut.
here is the path the air takes from the vents in the windshield cowl piece to the vents in the firewall towards the filter....the pic was taken from inside the channel in front of the windshield facing the vent holes i cut and meshed. It flows remarkably well...
The finished result...
I immediately recorded a 10-15 degree average drop in INTAKE temps with this mod, a CONSIDERABLE difference...No 20 HP boost, but yet another LITTLE thing that will help the car perform better, run cooler, faster, safer & for longer...
