Show more93Kw standard and about 191Nm of torque i think, it is the old 2L motor used in the earlier camrys and celicas but it is slightly bored out and stroked for a larger capacity, this gives it alot more low to midrange power but leaves the topend power figure still fairly with only a 7Kw gain, but the good news is it is easy to get more power out of the 2.2L motor for fairly cheap.
The celicas had this same engine but the bset model made 99Kw and the others about 97 Kw, this is due to the less restrictive exhausts used, and these are still a crappy and cheap exhaust system designed to be quiet rather than high flowing.
Adding a set of extractors, and a high flowing 2 - 2.25 inch exhaust and freeing up the intake pipe should see some good power gains and mid range torque bringing the power up to about 105Kw and torque to over 200Nm.
See the power graph on the celica below to prove the gains possible, it should be more on the camry as the standard power would be a few Kw less.
I went for a pod filter because the sound is great but it can often make you loose power by feeding the engine hot air, go for a K&N panel filter and rig up a 3 inch cold air feed from the front of the car to the air box.
If you want to go further, get a port and polish but this is where it gets more expensive.
Advance the timing of the engine to about 11 degrees, this will make the pistons fire harder and will increase torque without comprimising the engines durability.

Gen1 Gen2 or gen3 3sgte.
The gen 3 motor is more powerfull than the previous versions, power up from 225hp to 245hp, uses a better turbo, the ct20b as opposed to the ct26, has more aggressive cams, doesnt have the TVIS system featured on the gen 1 and 2 motors and has many other small difference such as a stainless steel head gasket. for a highly modified 3sgte, the difference between the motors would be less noticable, for example aftermarket cams in the gen1 or 2 with modified turbo and tvis removed will make much more power than the gen 3 in standard form.
where to get a 3sgte
these motors are imported from japan as engines, engine packages and half cuts, they are in gt4 celicas, mr2 gts, caldina turbos and more. expect to pay $2000 to $3000 for a package in Australian dollars, mine cost $2800.

Fitting a 3sgte in a camry.
the engine will bolt in without great drama, the front engine mount will need to be moved to accomadate the turbo and downpipe.
the mr2 gearbox will give you 5 reverse gears if you fit it because the engine is rotated 180 degrees in the mr2, the 3sgte will mount to the 5sfe gearbox with a different clutch peice ( i can find out if anyone needs to know).
the camry gearbox has a thinner cenral shaft than the 3sgte gearbox.
a good option is a celica gt4 gearbox as it is stronger and will cope with the extra power your bound to squeeze from this potent engine.
another option is a v6 manual transmission which one guy on the net has done.
an upgraded clutch is advised, at first i just put a different pressure plate with more clamping force, now i have a brass button clutch.
An aftermarket ecu will save you money in labour and be more flexible down the track, will allow you to fine tune the fuel air and ignition as well as many other parameters for maximum performance and economy and most importantly reliability, detonation will kill an untuned engine quick smart.
fitting an aftermarket front mount intercooler with custom piping will look the goods and outperform the standard units.
the camrys intake can be modified to make it 3 inch all the way with the panel filter in use, (ask for more details if needed) or a pod filter can be used but dont put in 2 inches from the turbo or it will breath hot air, which turbo engines hate, run it to a spot where it will get cool air at all times.
what exhaust system?
you will need at least a 2 1/2 inch exhaust or you will cook the turbo, go for a 3 inch for maximum power and low restriction, get a high flow cat convertor and rear muffler, i took out the centre muffler as it was too quiet, the turbo in the way of the exhaust acts as a muffler and quitens the exhaust alot, which is why you will hear people like me who drive turbo cars and talk about that great naturally aspirated sound of a screaming 4 cylinder on vtec or angry six like the 350z cars in fast and the furious tokyo drift.
however, this only realy applies when the power is on in the high revs, while cruising and gearing down you will get an unholy sound that is almost a spiritual experience for car nuts like me.
the same applies for intake sound, na cars sound mad with a pod and intake system, but the turbo wont get the same sound, though it sounds better than a panel filter on a plastic intake pipe.
Hows it go?
The power increase over the 5sfe is incredible, the camry becomes a raging animal and any tires less than 235 in width will be punished severely.
my car had good traction on 9psi, could plant first gear on a good dry road and put all the power down, once on 13psi, it spun first all the time except at the drag strip, even with the semi slicks on the front, it was still struggling for grip, but even wuth wheel spin the car catapults forward nailing big v8s while exciting the driver like riding a raging bull!
if your worried about turbo lag, there isnt any on the gen 3, its on boost at 1500rpm and flying, the engine pulls hard as nails to 5500rpm then power tapers off a bit, with such low down torque it is ofter best to shift gears earlier at about 6500 rather than the 7000rpm redline.
the 3sgte is almost the same in dimensions as the 5sfe and so the driveshafts will be about the same length so you wont get the crazy torque steer some front wheel drives get with bigger engines in them, there should be no torque steer giving a great straight line accelerator.
expect to fork out more for fuel as you wont be able to resist giving the mechanical athlete the gas it wants, the engine is lively and energetic and doesnt strain like the 5sfe but revs out with ease.
Modifying the 3sgte:
this has been covered on many websites so i wont go into it in much detail.
there are so many parts available for this engine from reputable brands like hks and jun and at good prices too.
look at the modifications i have made to my 3s on the previous page, after this comes the head:
more aggressive cams, adjustable cam gears, heavy duty valve springs and port and polish.
look to hks and the likes for these parts and a good performance shop for a port and polish, not a backyard mechanic!

hks cams come in a range of duration and lift settings for different engine powerbands, the crazy 272 degree cams will get the big hp numbers but lack lowdown power and will idle like a pig, think of big port rotorys.
these mods allow the engine to rev to 8000 or even 10000 rpm and with the right size turbo like the garrett gt3040r i have, and 20 to 25 psi, you can expect a ridiculous 500 to 600 hp at the wheels, dont beleive it, check www.mr2dynos.com to see 700hp dyno runs on video and quarter mile races too.

The car made 138Kw(177Hp) and 345Nm of torque on 9psi and 157Kw(211Hp) and 420Nm of torque on 13 psi with no new mods except the boost controller which apart... Show more from allowing more boost, allows it to spool up the turbo quicker for more boost earlier in the revs giving more power and torque. also the boost doesnt taper off in the top end. Show Less
