Barrett-Jackson is the second greatest show on earth. Why second? Because "The Greatest" is trademarked! But can a bunch of elephants and midgets compete with this cavalcade of cars? Nope. 426 Hemisand the insane prices people paidwere the buzz last year. This year, collectors were holding their collective breath, hoping that the bubble would burst and prices would drop. Hemis didn't have the same staying power, Shelbys and 50s cruisers held their own. But who really cares about prices. Pop culture fiends had a field day with John Schneider's "General Lee" Charger and the Monkeemobile GTO, while Detroit romantics left puddles of saliva by the "Pink Lady" '59 Pontiac originally owned by Harley Earl's wife. And the custom crowd was given a run for their money with two factory specials from 1963: the Corvette "Rondine" designed by Pininfarina for the Paris Auto Show, and the Thunderbird "Italien" fastback designed in-house at Ford.
But the fun wasn't only at B-J, because the Russo and Steele auction was nearby. This a more intimate affair where the specialty is American muscle and Italian sports cars. A super-rare '62 409 4-door Chevy nicely complemented an alloy Jaguar XK140 and Allard J2much like how the auction complemented the second greatest show on Earth. Enjoy the photos.
